Twice a day. Feed as much as they can eat in 3-5 minutes. Net out the rest. Feed a variety of quality foods appropriate to the particular fish type.

Depending on how many fish are in the tank, sprinkle an appropriate portion of food once a day. I like to feed on a schedule, my fish actually know when it's feeding time and get real frisky when I get near them. Since I can't pet or hold them, it's a way to interact. I have one that will take a pinch of food right from my hand.

Once a day is plenty, but if you feel they need more, give them a slice of blanched zucchini to pick on. The omnivorous fish will enjoy it all day long. Just be sure to remove the left-overs at the end of the day. Also, water quality work may increase slightly, because you know what happens when fish eat more. Some fish will pick at a piece of plant material all day. Plecos also benefit from this practice. Good luck.-----PeeTee

freshwater fish - once. they are fish, not human. If you are feeding them more often than that, you are over feeding them - in the long run, this will shorten their lifespan.
They will eat the tiny peices that collect in the gravel, as well as algae for the rest of the day.

most people only feed their freshwater fish once a day. that's what i do. They are fish not humans! we eat 3 meals a day... that's too much for freshwater fish, though. They would die if they are overfed.

It really depend on your preferences you can feed them one to three times per day but make sure you don't give them to much at one time if you feed more often.
