I would first get recommendations from people you know who have employed attorneys. For instance, do you know somebody at work, at your church, synagogue, or mosque who has employed an attorney? Did they have a good experience with that attorney?

You could ask certain businesses for recommendations. For instance, if you are purchasing a house, perhaps your Realtor or title company could recommend an attorney.

If you need to have some estate planning work done, you might ask a bank trust department to recommend a good estate attorney.

Next, you might go to the Martindale-Hubble website, http://www.martindale.com. You can search for attorneys by name and by town. I like the Martindale website because it includes attorney "peer ratings", and that means a lot because it enables you to get one who is well regarded.

Of course, you could also open the Yellow Pages of your telephone book and just choose one that has an appealing advertisement.

The best place is a reference. If you don't have a reference you can check out Martindale.com. They have a section for attorneys that are AV rated. The problem with this rating system is they are rated by other attorneys. It is like a cycle though because the attorneys that they rate are also rating them and so on, so I'm not sure how credible it is. My recommendation would be to start by looking at their websites and make a decision based upon the information. Many attorneys will post articles on their sites of recent cases won etc. In some cases they have newspaper articles, magazine artices, as well as video of them speaking on TV etc. This to me would be the best way to find an attorney. I have attached a lawyer search engine in which you can search tons of attorneys. The search engine is just that, a lawyers search engine. I have also attached a legal portal along with a directory of lawyers. 3 different sources of lawyers and most all have websites. Happy investigations and good luck...

Start with the phone book! Depending on the case you have depends on what kind of Attorney to look for. Most give free consultations and will let you know if they would even take or consider taking your case. They would also let you know where you stand in whatever it is you need them for. Just get a feel for what one seems best to you. Also the ones you see on TV are there for a reason.....There good!! That's why they have enough money to to have Commercials! Don't just go with one that is a good deal as well, cause for most part with Lawyers you get what you pay for.

Good luck hope this helps!!

I'd check the billboards.

Seriously, this effing site is so rampant with people eager to answer, you'd probably be well-advised to be more specific with the question - what city and what kind of situation you're in.
