First, get an x-ray to make sure you have not broken a bone. If the ankle is extremely painful, ice it for the first 24 hours then change to heat therapy. Heat brings increased blood flow to the area which is how the body heals itself.
Elevate it as well for the first 24 hours and apply compression in the form of an ace bandage (at the very minimum).
Assuming you can tolerate them, take Advil or Motrin, not Tylenol, as Advil and Motrin will help relieve inflammation, Tylenol does not.
If you have chronic ankle sprains you need to find the source of these sprains. I suggest you see a podiatrist.

I have found that wearing an ankle support helps reduce pain and keeps the ankle in place so it can heal. Giving your ankle lots of rest and sometimes some ice to numb the ankle area.
