I am thinking about relocating because N.C. has a hugely unfair tax system ie; personal, local, state. (IT seems to me that the sheep -(taxpayers) are happy to give and give and give.)
I was looking at Tennessee, or South Carolina (leaning towards the former) Maybe Texas but I think the property tax is getting a bit high.
Please be nice.

Alaska. No seriously. No state income tax and they pay you to live there. I am from Hawaii which is worse tax wise than NC. Here is a state tax ranking chart as well.

I'd recommend against Tennessee. I moved from a state income tax state to Tennessee and I swear I pay more tax now. The sales tax is what kills you - 9.25% on everything - milk, bread, cars, services (like haircuts) etc. Plus I haven't seen any indication that the cost of living is less than most other similar states - in fact, it seems to be more. Jobs are few and far between, and pay less than other areas. Don't want to mislead in anyway - you might find a larger city and it may work out better. But from what I've seen, I'd rather have state income tax than this.

There are several states with no state income tax, but for the most part they make it up in other taxes. Relocating to save taxes seems a bit drastic.
