All trees have ultimate size at maturity.
Trees should be planted away from the house accordingly.
Example:
A known tree can get at best 30 feet high and get a umbrella of 30 feet(diameter) then to protect the house it should be 30 feet away from a house. This will protect the house, from falling tree.
Good guess is that, all tree are as big above ground, as under ground. So this way roots will not reach the foundation. If you do not believe this then pot any tap root tree in a pot, using a seed and then after 2 years dig around to find the reach of the roots and pull it out to replant it in a bigger pot at that time measure the height of the tree above ground and the and the depth of the tree in ground.
Unless you are able to trick a tree in growing differently , all trees have root system that is a exact mirror image of the, tree.
Tricks:
Topping: Will keep the tree from growing tall.
Pruning: Will keep the tree from spreading.
Tying with wires(bonsai): keeps it miniature , go to a Japanese garden and see it.

The Asoka tree is quite common in indian household gardens. Like with all trees they must be planted a reasonable distance from the house, to avoid many types of damage for many reasons. All trees should be planted at least 7 to 8 feet if not more away from the house in order to allow for growth.
