We can talk to them directly and they do usually understand us.
The thing is, they pick up what we say telepathically... more than the actually words we speak.
If we speak English to them, they do learn some English words, but they only understand exactly what we say, when we think what we say.
For example..... if you had a dog that you didn't want to get on the couch and tear up the pillows while you were out, you might say don’t get on the couch.. don’t tear up the pillows… stay down !
You are not allowed on the couch, don’t tear anything up, etc. and meanwhile you are thinking in your mind at the same time that they will be on the couch, and you can just see in your mind everything all torn up.
Well, they receive telepathically and they are seeing you, see them, on the couch tearing everything up and then they think that is what you are showing them to do.
Then you come home and are upset and they don’t understand why.
It is because they are much better at picking up your thought forms than words, and that is also why it really doesn't matter what language we speak verbally to them.
The telepathic thoughts are in the form of energy which they interpret and that is also how the communicator interprets the animals messages.
So they can understand you when you talk verbally to them ( or mentally/telepathically too ) as long as you focus on what you are saying.
Say what you mean and visualize what you are saying.
As you practice with focusing on what you say, you will be amazed at how well they respond.

If my dog is any indication, I believe that they can understand what we say. Sometimes they even learn to understand when we spell words so that the dog does not get too excited, eg if we are deciding whether or not to go for a walk.
I also believe that animals can detect our feelings from our aura. If we exhibit fear an animal may become aggressive towards us. However, should we have an air of confidence and friendliness, the animal will normally respond accordingly.

Some animals learn a few words and phrases. Some species have the learning capacity to learn more than others, and, within the same species, some members are just smarter than others.
What most pets seem to respond to the most, though, is the tone of your voice.
None, however, can seem to understand complex, novel sentences. Their brains aren't designed to communicate and understand language, but they are designed to remember and respond to auditory stimuli.
