This probably isn’t what you expected, but I’m going to say Superman… the FIRST time he died.

This was when an alien came to Earth and broke into a major radio station in Metropolis. He had a device that would break Kryptonite down into energy waves and transmit it over the radio. Soon all Metropolis was blanketed with Kryptonite radio waves.

Superman was in horrible pain but couldn’t figure out where it was coming from, and couldn’t fly far enough or fast enough to escape. The alien caught him and took his dead body back to his planet as a trophy, towing it behind his space ship so that orbiting astronauts could see who it was!

(This was in Action 163, or thereabouts. That was a long, lo—ong time ago!)

If not for an unexpected ally on that alien world, who reversed the action of the Kryptonite transmitter and sicked the deadly energy out of Superman’s cells (after which he revived), he’d still be dead!

And this was the “original Pre-Crisis, juggle planets, blow out supernovas, only vulnerable to K, magic, and Virus X” Superman, not the watered-down, modern version!

Sorry, but I have to count THAT death as the most dramatic one, even if it was done in secret so all Metropolis didn’t get to see him die.

Superman. No one expected that DC would be crazy enough to kill the franchise. Besides, his death came at a time when DC usually didn't kill off substantial characters, especially the main one. Since his death, both Marvel and DC have made killing big names a routine thing. Usually during a major crossover you can expect at least one big name to die only to be resurrected six months later. Also, Superman's death was a classic comic story. It had a bad guy and good guy. No political overtones or societal reflection. Just a brawl. Comic fans read comics to get away from the real world for a while, not be reminded of it.

Even though Sup's death was the first of it's kind, and it was amazingly done, it was still lead up to. There were two or three issues were he was just getting the crap be out of him or kicking the crap out of Doomsday. And he came back in the end. Now it did start a trend for "crossover killings" of major players, but it was still expected. Cap's death wasn't as expected. You thought may be Spidey or Iron Man, but not Cap. And not Cap after most everything was said and done in the civil war. Plus Cap was a human not a Kryptonian that could revive cause of the sun. Cap was shot and died. They will probably try to find a way to bring him back like time travel or a dimensional hole or something, but at least he actually died, not in a hybernating state.
