*First* decide what "scale" you'll use. Some of the commonest ones are 1:6 (Barbie), 1:12 (Modern dollhouse), 1:16 (Renwal plastic), 1:144 (dollhouse-dollhouse).

Fine-grained wood will be easier to work with than coarse-grained wood. A suitable "scale" ruler is a good investment, preventing much frustration.

Decide whether or not it will have inhabitants *now*. It'll be easier to fit accessories to figures than vice versa.

My mother built her own dollhouse about 20 years ago. It took a couple of years to do, and she enjoyed the process, but she had to invent a lot of it herself. She even cut her own shingles! You already got some good answers, I just wanted to wish you good luck. Start off with prepared plans, but don't be afraid to go in your own direction if you start feeling creative!
