If my friends get no answer from me when they step in, it could be just about anything. My life is so random, but I like it that way. Most people phone before they come over to a person's place I've heard, but if your one of the buds, you can usually come right in no matter the hour. Not that I keep the door open, but they often know how to get in, as I'm almost never asleep. Heck, it's 4:00 in the morning right now even.
I need not hide when I'm home. When I get annoyed, others are the ones hiding. I'm brutally efficient when I'm irritated so much so that I don't even need to be violent. So I need not hide. As for my friends, since they get so used to being able to come and go in my home, they often do not mind me doing it in theirs. If I don't get an answer, they are certainly out. We just like it that way.
But if you are asking for generalizations, I find that often it seems to be a mixture, and more often then not, people will act like they are not home a little more towards someone they don't know well or had a bad experience with. To the friends or business related people they see often, they tend to be a little more inviting.

Maybe. Hiding is also a possibility. Maybe they have taken a temporary vow of silence. Maybe they are just curious to see how long the banging on the door will go on and that person calls it a day. Maybe, he saw your bible or your brief case, ( a sure sign you want to sell him something.

When i go to a friends house i always phone first to make sure they are there and its convenient for me to visit them

mabe they never answer the door until the person rings them to ask to be let in. then they know that the person has been invited over.
