We blink our eyes to moisturize the membrane over the eye, and it carries oxygen to the eye surface (it doesn't have a blood flow) and to clean the grit etc.
And you don't blink, as such, when sleeping, because your lids are already shut. But your eyelids do flutter during R.E.M. sleep.

Blinking is the rapid closing and opening of the eyelid.
Blinking provides moisture to the eye by irrigation using tears and a lubricant the eyes secrete. The eyelid provides suction across the eye from the tear duct to the entire eyeball to keep it from drying out

ur eyes will b closed wont they?
then how can u blink???
u dont possibly sleep keeping ur eyes open[in that case u wud blink]
but ther r some animals [only heard of ] that they keep their eyes open and sleep

to keep ur eyes clean we blink and we keep ur eyes closed while sleeping so no chance of blinking eyes
