Maybe you are not supposed to use any rock with it.
They do sell wood chips for the flavoring. You soak them in water for ten or fifteen minutes and then put them in a pan and sit it on the grill and as they burn it gives off the smokey flavor. You can do the same thing with hickory, mesquite, or any other wood you want to try.

What you need are ceramic briquet's to put where you would normally place the rock. The reason for not putting the rock down is when it gets hot, it has a tendency to explode, where the ceramic briquettes evenly diffuse the flame. Get some wood chips for that smokey flavor. I found a small steel box designed to put the chips in it at Walmart for $6. My favorite wood is pecan, followed by apple and wild plum. Enjoy the convenience of flame and temperature control at your fingertips.

Many of the new gas grills do not use rocks at all. They just have gas burners like a kitchen range.
