Firstly, it's traditional to shut anything that may very well be a Pandora's box. Then there are insects who are trying to get into there too. Then there are animals who will dig in and have themselves a meal if it's unsecured.
Then there's the fact that there are a lot of sick ***** out there who rob graveyards to either sell the corpses or sexually molest them. Need I say more?

Interesting answer-I assure you if bugs or grave robbers want to get in there a few nails won't stop them.
I imagine it was originally so the lid won't slide off as the coffin is carried out of the service to the grave site. But I believe modern caskets have a kind of catch to fasten it shut-I certainly don't remember any hammering at my sister's funeral and the coffin was in plain sight throughout.

Just in case the mourtuary made a mistake and the person is still alive. That way they dont have to refund the money. True, and sad.
