Chances are that you will need to change it due to contamination long before it starts breaking down. Should easily last twice or more than mineral oils.
A lot depends on what you are using it in.

It depends on driving conditions. I used to run synthetic oil, and would change it at 3 times the recomended milage. At each recomend oil change interval however, I would change the FILTER and top up the oil.
Removing the particulate matter is VITAL to the process, and making sure the engine heats up to operating temperture and burns off the contaminants, and acids that build up in engine oil. If you are not running the car for a least 40 to 60 minutes in a continuous drive, once per week you oil will build up contaminants and need to be changed more often.

Synthetic will go about 20,000 miles before it loses much of its viscosity, however, you need to change it every 7-10K because it absorbs contaminents that will eat at the metal parts

i use synthetic oil in my car and i was told when i got my car it would go 5,000 miles before i needed an oil change but I'm sure it would go a bit over that

It pretty much never breaks down. It's still in good shape viscosity wise after 25,000 miles You change it because it gets dirty, and the additives wear out.

no longer than normal oil, you still have to change it at regular service time.
