With so many reality television programmes around like Idol, The Amazing Race, Big Brother and The Apprentice, are the youth of today becoming lacklustre in their ambitions because they think they can just win their way to fame and fortune?

A phrase I greatly enjoy from recent years is, "welfare celebrity;" that is, someone who has gained fame but not wealth by appearing on one of the reality shows. That has nothing to do with the question, just brought to mind as a tangent.

I think young people have always, and will always, dream of fame and fortune. Ambition to celebrity is nothing new, but with the 10,000 cable networks and glut of reality television, there is a greater chance than ever of actually achieving Warhol's fifteen minutes of fame.

I don't really think reality television has made the ache for an easy life any worse, and I don't think today's kids are any less ambitious than my generation (GenX) was. American adolescence is a time for idle dreams.
