im asking my friend to prom by painting it on her plate when we go out to eat, the pottery place nearby doesn't have any plats that look like it and i dont have that much time to wait for it to be glazed and fired. I was thinking i might be able to find food safe paint for a pre glazed plate from the restaurant. or i was thinking multicolored sharpie pens. that might be a bad idea though lol.

Hey, why not use the painted plate for underneath, and buy a clear glass one to put on top of it! I bet you can find a cear glass plate at a thrift store.

The bottom plate is called a "charger". I don't know why it's called that, but it means a plate that you don't eat off of. She'll get to keep it and hang it on her wall.

nothing you put on top of a glaze except china paints that are fired would be safe, im not sure how long it is till prom, but if its an active ceramic shop you should have a finished plate in less than a week.

Why don't you try painting it in a mirror image on the back of a glass plate and then backing the plate with something to make the text stand out? Then you don't have to worry about the possible poison thing.....that's never good on a date.
