Well - as yet nobody has really explained emo to me, but if by that you mean over emotional and depressed, then Holden Caulfiend kind of fills the bill. Or maybe it has something to do with Mark David Chapman killing John Lennon and sitting down on the curb to read Catcher? Dont know - nobody explained it to me and when I ask my son what emo is he just rolls his eyes. Somebody write me and explain. Pax - C.

You have to consider the historical issues involved. Catcher in the Rye was written around 1953. At the time, the inner life of teenagers was not described so accurately or honestly. Thus it caused a great sensation and still does. Thousands of books written since then have gotten their inspiration from that book. It was an innovative piece of writing at the time and it's also well-written. Think about how significant it is to do create a work of art no one has done before that affects so many people. Very few books have done so.

okay first off, associating a literary masterpiece with emo completely disrespects the writing considering emo is just an angsty teenaged state of self-absorbance. and if needbe, holden's personality does share similarities with those of 'emo' kids a.k.a. teenagers.
