I dreamt about my friend who died a couple of years ago. In my dream I was searching for him as if he was still alive or trapped somewhere. We weren't especially close, he was just some I knew in grade school. I didn't get to go to his funeral, if that matters. He died very young, only 20 or 21. Why did I dream about him like that?

OK, the fact that you're trying to find him in your dream could mean that you wish you had taken the time to get to know him when he was alive. You feel like you missed out on getting to know him well in life, so in your dream you're trying to find him.
That's what I think. Hope this helps.

One school of dream interpretation says that everything in your dream is you, your entire dream is about you, all the characters are you, all the places are you, etc. So your "friend" is a part of you that you are searching for, the part of you that you identified with him. When he died you lost your reflector of those qualities he reflected to you. Think about where it was you were searching for him. You mention he was possibly alive but maybe trapped. Could it be that part of your personality is being missed by you but it still exists and you are looking for it? This is but one interpretation. I'm sure there are others.

Here is the best way to analyze your dream.

Write down every detail of your dream like a story. Starting at the beginning, slowly go through the story and pull out every little thing that was there (objects, people, smells, sounds, etc.) and then write down what you feel each of those individual things symbolize to you. Then once you've finished going through the dream and writing down each symbol and meaning, read through your meanings (which will sound choppy) and piece together what they all mean as a whole.

How did your friend die? Maybe if he had died a sudden death his spirit is still somewhere on this earth and he has finally turned to you for help to solve something about his death that's not quite right so he can go to the next life peacefully and he doesn't have to linger in ths realm anymore.

I've always known dreams of the deceased was your unconscious telling you of their condition now in the afterlife. Even though I believe your dreams mainly 'log' your current feelings, the already deceased are always a special spiritual meaning. How did your friend look? Did you get to see him? Did you find him? Maybe it was a poignant reminder of how you feel "lost" in your current state of spirituality. Are you currently thinking about your spirituality or the afterlife?

It's mean:

You will die soon

OR

He will become your husband in the future
