Our fantail goldfishs left eye has a white cloudy mucus over it and a red ring that goes around the outside of the eye. The right eye is fine. what could the cause of this be?

We changed the water and cleaned the tank nearly 2 weeks ago. Should tanks be maintained more often then this? And is this a possible cause too?

The tank is 70cm x 40 cm x 40cm.

There is the fantail, 3 danios, 1 sucker fish and 1 australian rainbow fish.

The white stuff on it's eye is white and actually looks fluffy, so i guess it is fungus. It also appeared to grow larger overnight.

If the cloudiness is confined to the eye ball only, you are dealing with a bacterial infection.

If it's cloudy and fuzzy, then I would say its a fungus.

If the cloudiness is on he eye and also on surrounding skin you are mostly likely looking at a protozoan infestation.

The red ring maybe physical damage or may be irritation caused by a protozoan infestation or could even be he very beginning stages of pop eye.

Given everything together, I would suggest that it's a bacterial infection and recommend that you treat with a good quality antibiotic. Since there is some chance an internal infection is involved my first choice would be treating with Furanace. My second choice would be Maracyn 2. If this is the case, treating in a quarantine tank is a good idea.

If from what I have said you suspect it's a fungus or a protozoan, you would need to treat your entire tank to be completely rid or the problem.

Feel free to email me if I can help further.

The red ring sounds like he may have had an abrasion or something. Then the clouding came as a secondary infection. It can be caused in a fight with another fish or bumping into a decoration or the tank wall or even digging to furiously in gravel. If there are other fish in the tank, remove the one with the cloudy eye to a hospital tank. (this can even be a rubbermaid container of some kind) Treat for 5 days with an antibiotic. Just follow the pkg directions.
How large is the tank and how many fish are in it? A goldfish needs 10 gallons each. The smaller the tank, the more frequently water changes must be done. With a 10 gallon, and a high bioload fish like a goldfish, you should do a 25 - 30% water change every week. If your filter is meant for a larger tank, you can be a bit more relaxed on tank maintenance.

It's a fungal infection. You need to get some anti-fungal treatment from your aquarium shop. Infections are often caused by tanks not being cleaned enough. You should clean it at least once a week, and have a good filter system. Make sure you don't over-feed the fish, because rotting food is the main cause of infections.
