If "design" means a structure as it is related to function, and doesn't imply a human or a divine designer, then it can apply to natural selection. However, there is no plan "in mind," as if nature is some person.

In a population of organisms, heritable variations of design arise at random through generations. These variations enable some members of a population to become more fit to reproduce under certain conditions. For example, if long-necked giraffes could reach food better than short-necked giraffes, the long-necked giraffes would survive, reproduce, and yield a population consisting solely of long-necked giraffes. As the other designs are rejected, the altered design of the survivors is continued.

So basically, evolutionary adaptation is improved design for life.

Natural selection goes by what has become most beneficial to a certain species. Nature itself does not have a particular design that it is following because natural selection and evolution come as a result of changes in the environment and other types of factors which cause a species to evolve over time.

Natural selection is random; many mutations occur, and the ones which help the organism survive and reproduce are successful and will reproduce. If there were any "design", would not your concept of a "designer" have made it the "design" way to start with?

Nature has nothing "in mind". Natural selection is not guided by anything other than survival.

Nature is not a person, it doesn't 'think'. It just tends to reenforce what works. That in a nutshell is natural selection. If you happen to have a trait which enables you to survive, then you get to breed. - sounds like fun.

no. i think that it is completely accidental.
if it works, nature goes with it.
if it doesn't work, nature sits there for awhile until another accident happens.

No. Nature don't work like that.

Nature has no "plan" or "design".

God (or "Nature" as you call it) has His eyes, focused on US and our needs.

It all plays out...........carefully.........expertly.... perfectly.

That's His way. It's how He rolls.
