Pietro is the original form of the name derivated from the Greek Petros meaning 'stone' (that also originates Peter btw....!!). However in Italy the form Piero is the most common (it's also my real first name...!!) even if both names are a bit out of current fashion.
Other similar names (that actually are diminutive) are Pierino,
Pietrino, Pietruccio.
In Italy is also common to join 2 names and get a new name.
Combined with Piero are many other names and result is :
Pierangelo / Pierantonio / Pierfrancesco / Piergiorgio / Piercarlo / Pierluigi ect. ect.

...I always liked piero, but pietro means peter...beter piero,it doesn't have that hard t sound in it, and piero is more modern...
