Here's some ideas to "roll ya own" Internet Security Suite for free. Free is always the best.
1. For your Anti-Virus......(Always use only 1 A-V)
I like the FREE, AOL ActiveVirusShield. Don't let the name AOL scare you. ActiveVirusShield is made by Kaspersky which is one of top-rated anti-virus vendors in the world.
In recent tests, the most popular free anti-virus, AVG, was only able to detect about 82% of a very large sample of viruses. On the other hand, ActiveVirusShield was able to detect better than 99% in the same test.
Full test results are here:
http://www.virus.gr/english/fullxml/default.asp?id=82&mnu=82
ActiveVirusShield has excellent virus detection rates and is extremely light on using your computer resources.
Updates many times per day to detect new malware.
Free to anyone, AOL member or not from:

2. For your Firewall..........(Always use only 1 firewall)
An excellent free firewall is Comodo Personal Firewall. It can pass firewall "leak tests" that even most of the "paid-for" firewalls cannot pass.
And Comodo has a great support forum. Where the CEO / President of the company might even himself answer your question! Check it out at:
http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/
3. For your Anti-Adware and Anti-Spyware needs...............(use 2)
Pick and choose, 2 anti-spywares from the list below and alternate scanning with them on a regular basis. New spywares are created literally hourly, so no single anti-spyware can really detect all malware. Have at least 2 on hand and alternate scanning with each every few days or so. All are free. All can remove as well as detect.
Spybot Search and Destroy:

SUPERAntiSpyware:

Unfortunately, many "paid for" anti-spyware products are in fact either of limited usefulness or downright scams. When in doubt, look at the list of rogue anti-spyware solutions listed here:
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/rogue_anti-spyware.htm
4. And to protect your computer from ever getting infected with spyware in the first place............ (use them both)
SpywareBlaster:

SiteAdvisor:

Everything here is 100% free!!!!!!
Great luck!

Some people reformat their computer to clean the entire hard drive and start again. You would lose everything stored on your hard drive ( the memory). I think its safe to ignore that advice until you are more confident and know what you are doing. You would have to know how to re-install windows, set the bios, update any drivers and re-install all your software. Don't worry about it. Instead just make sure you update and run all your security software at least once a week, and defragment the hard drive once a month. You do that by logging off the internet, then go to Start - All Programs - Accessories - System Tools - Disc Defragmenter. Leave your pc alone until it has finished defragmenting, dont try to use it.

And a 30 day full version of norton 360......I tried many but am really impressed with AVG as mentioned above. And remember make your passwords with letters and numbers.

You are the complete security. No antivirus program or firewall will help you if you are careless.
With Windows firewall on and a good antivirus program running (with automatic update on) - that's about all you can do as a preventive. Before power-off, run an antispy or ad-aware program to get rid of tracking cookies.

No computer can be completely secure but you can make it real hard for someone to get through. Install hardware and software firewall, anti virus, anti spywares, stealth all your ports, don't click on any suspicious links, do not download questionable softwares, scan for malwares weekly, do not keep important documents on your PC--if you do make sure it's encrypted with a strong password, same thing with your wireless and always keep your PC up to dates.

Zone Alarm gives you a free Firewall, which is a great company. Also you can get AVG Free Virus scanner, or full on buy McAfee (no Norton.) You can get Ad-Aware SE for free online at their site, or even go for XOFTspy. The more you have, the safer...just bad performance. General rule is one Firewall, one virus scanner, one adaware scanner. Your security only relies on one thing: you. If you go to sites with bad things, you get bad things. And as long as you have a firewall, nothing bad will come to you...so you are the one and only cause.
