a question about struts?

hi guys!, i have a 1988 olds delta 88 3.8,and iam going to change back struts on my car.they are seperate from the springs,and i was considering on buying monroe struts.whats your opinion on that brand of strut?,and are they too hard to change?i worked on lots of cars,but this will be my first time tackling struts,but iam not rich,to take it to the garage,so iam adventuring on them myself.i checked advance and they are asking $140.00 for both struts.do you think thats a good buy?thanks guys.

yea. buy the strut compressor at auto zone for 30.00 bucks

simple installation ,as the shock absorber. monroe.

I prefer KYB struts and shocks. Unlike Monroe the KYB units are actually built to original equipment specs so that once installed, the car rides and handles like Olds intended. Monroe struts and shocks are not valved to the specific applications they fit. I've had complaints from customers on some installations that they are excessively stiff and have even had to remove a few sets and replace them with something else.

struts are struts the type of ride you want and the warranty should determine what kind of shock you buy not the name brand. if the struts are separate from the spring then they are shocks not struts. as long as the nuts are not froze up it will be a short job. but the shocks control travel so don't jack your car up and let the suspension hang jack. or when you take the shock off the suspension will drop. Jack it up so that the shocks are half way in there stroke put some jack stands under the frame and the remove the shocks .

I thought a car that old would have regular shocks in the back? Or did you just used the wrong term? Struts are McPherson struts. Shocks are just shock absorbers. Very different beasts.

From what I find on the net, Delta 88 have Coil Springs / Regular Shocks in the back, no struts. Struts are mainly for Front-wheel-drive cars, and your Olds ain't one of those.
