first of all, remember this: some people can just naturally cry on cue. However, for most of us, its a bit tougher then that. I would not recommend ever putting anything into your eye. You dont want to damage your eyes. If you are preparing for a role, put yourself into that character's shoes. Why are they crying? If they are crying out of sadness from a death or horrible event, make youself feel what that character is feeling. Your natural reaction should then come. If that does not work, perhaps think of a time when you were extremely sad and cried. Relive the emotion of that moment without actually reliving the moment. No director should ever force you to cry. Its the natural reaction from feeling "in the moment" that causes tears. However, if you find yourself needing to cry, putting a dab of mint or onion under your eye, near your lower lashes, can often do the trick. Make sure ints under your eye, though, and not in. You want to cry, not be blinded or in pain.

Try to remember how you physically feel when you cry for real. Your chin gets tight and trembly, you get a lump in your throat, you blink your eyes to try and *stop* the tears.
If you can work on getting the physical associations, the tears aren't far behind.
And remember, once an actor cries, the emotion is spent. It's more intense if you try *not* to cry.
Hope this helps. Good luck.

What I do is think of something so incredibly sad you can help crying. This is probably the best way because it wont look fake, because its not. And it doesnt take a lot of effort to do if you know exactly what to think about.

When trying to cry, think of it emotionally and with passion. Show how great it is to you. Put your all in. Make it not feel like acting, but real and with great power. This should improve your crying. It helps me every time.

It's hard to just cry on cue when you're trying to cry. You don't just sit there in real life and go "hmmm I think I'm going to cry now" and start balling. It just doesn't happen. You always have a reason for crying. "my father died, I'll never get the chance to see him again" ect. So here's a quick formula to help you bring out those emotions:
Think of something you want more than anything else in the world (it helps if it's something like "I want my father to love me" or "I just want my boyfriend to trust me" " I want my mom to be proud of me" But think of it more like "I want you to love me" "I want you to trust me" "I want you to be proud of me" Act as if you are talking to that person (just not aloud))
Imagine getting it. Imagine all the feelings that would come from it. The joy, happiness, ect.
Then imagine that being taken away from you. They died or the left. You'll never get him to love you. You'll never make her proud. You'll never get him to trust you. (Again phrase it in your thoughts as "I'll never get you to love me" "I'll never make you proud" "I'll never get you to trust me")
Then just let it go. Don't try to cry. Just think about the thoughts of not getting what you want. Concentrate on those thoughts, and the tears will flow naturally. After practicing a couple of times, it'll become easy to get those tears to flow right on cue and fast.
Trust me. It really does work.
