the oldest evidence of civilization (which in technical terms means a city with walls) was the city of Ur, which can be found in southern Iraq. There is evidence of trade with other places in the artifacts of Ur, but no evidence of the cities themselves have ever been found.

Interesting Query.

The latest thinking is that civilization began between 10,000 and 8,000 BC in the Near East.

Several inventions or discoveries made a larger population and a settled existence possible. One was living near alluvial rivers, rivers that deposit fertile mud after a shallow winter when spring snow melt swelsl their beds or the rains come. Another was domesticating animals to help with plowing, provide eggs, leather, etc. And a third was the "organization" that made widespread effective planting central storage of grain against famine, a managed economy even under god-priest-kings as well as a larger army for defense or plunder possible, and eventually record keeping.

No one agrees on the very first site But it was Near Eastern, probably with mud-brick walls, next to a river, and maybe with something like salt deposits nearby, rafts to float things to and from the city, animals, a mild climate, and organization above all.

Best indication is the first towns were in Iraq and Iran.

Yes, the cradle of civilization is arguably the
most uncivilized place on the planet right now.

Note, however, there are signs of humans
and their ancestors in Africa (Kenya, etc).
