I read that if a global effort was made to build a spaceship that could travel at half the speed of light, that within 10 years it would become a reality.

Yes it's true. The engine used is called the ion propulsion engine. I don't think cost is holding back, but is probably has more to due with the knowing "everything" about using this technology to it's greatest efficiency. Oh yeah it would take a long time for the engine to be able to reach the 1/2 the speed of light too.

Science Fiction novels are almost a dime a dozen. You can read almost anything in them. You suggest that it might be possible to travel 93,000 Miles Per Second soon. Balderdash. . . . The fastest we have been able to accelerate any man made object thus far with the very best technology is about 50,000 Miles Per HOUR IN SPACE. In doing that the pilots sustained the utmost amount of G force that was possible to be withstood by human beings. You expect us to think that it is feasible to accelerate something manmade 120 Times Faster than that and have the creatures inside remain alive? Sorry. The carbon based occupants would be jelly mush smeared all over the walls of the capsule or space ship in microseconds. What you suggest is sheer folly.

No, we can't even travel at 5% the speed of light. Simply due to collisions with particles in space that would penetrate the space craft like buckshot through a pop can.

Maybe, possible.
BUT need Ion Drive, some Warp Drive to go Faster.
BUT for Long Distances IE Intersteller we need to Fold SpaceTime.

Or 100 years from Earth to Capricorn system alone or longer & going at the fastest rate in Space anyway.
