Elizabeth Dole, Jesse Jackson, Al Sharpton to name a few have run. No woman or minority candidate has ever received a major party's nomination, though. Not yet, anyway. Hopefully we will see a major candidate and a President within the next couple of decades.

Victoria Woodhull Fredrick Douglas ran in the 1872 election under the equal rights party. Jesse Jackson in 1984 and 1988 was serious contender for the democratic nomination.Al Sharpton ran in 2000 I believe. Geraldine Ferraro was Mondale's VP candidate in 1984.

Geroldine Ferraro was a vice presidential running mate to Walter Mondale. They lost the election .Jesse Jerkson has tried a couple of times.

Jesse Jackson ran in the 90s. Thank goodness he didn't win.

Obama is the first legitimate black candidate to run in my opinion.

Yes, and yes. America elected its first black President in 1992 and he served until 2000. I'm not sure who the first woman to run was but John Edwards ran in 2004, so its been done.
