This is only a hunch but I had a Ranger 99' that I ported the intake and when I put the gaskets on I didn't realize they were the wrong ones and my truck ran similar to what you describe. There could be a crack in the intake manifold. Also check the air intake to be sure it's the right one for the truck. Also the rattling could be a heat shield of some sort because the engine is running rough. Definitely give it a tune up and check for any cracks, seal issues and sensors that need to be pluged in. Hope you fix it.Good luck.

Rattling could be a large amount of problems. Anything from lifters/pushrods to a rod knocking. If it's hard to keep running it sounds like it's in the topend. Take it to an Advanced Auto or AutoZone and have them run a computer diagnostics test on it (it's free). Your truck's computer is 96-up year model so it's OBD-II which means they can hook it up. Just ask them and they SHOULD be able to pinpoint or get close to what's going on. You do get a check engine light correct? If so, take it to them and they can help. If nothing shows up on the computer take it to a true mechanic... They're the only ones who can help unless it's still under a warranty(which i doubt). Which then you can take it to the dealership you bought it from...

A really bad rattling noise could be a thrown rod. You can pull the plugs and check to see if all the pistons move when you crank it and do a compression check to narrow it down.

There could be a number of problems. I cannot specify what the certain problem is. Better off to take it to a shop, have it inspected and have a professional look at it firsthand. Then, you can start from there and go farther to resolve the problem. Best wishes!!!

Yes very vague idea... either severe misfire possibly related to the coil packs or my guess is the tube going to the PCV valve broke at the back of the intake.. this will cause the engine to misfire badly to where you will hear weird noises and such... see if you hear hissing from toward the back of the motor.

Could be as simple as you got a tank of crap for gas or someone filled it with diesel fuel instead of gas but it also
could be more serious like a rod knock did you run it out of oil or something, over rev it? over heated it?

simple test remove gas cap and smell it, does it smell funny or does it smell like gas?

if it's not the gas you need to have a pro check it out.

very vague description of concern. possibly timing chains,cams/lifters,rod&main bearings, broken exhaust cats. many possibilities, where is noise coming from front, rear, top, bottom? helps to try to clarify. try adding more info in question.will check again.

Answered your own question . . . bad engine.
Timing chain could have jumped - bent valves.
Rod bearing(s) bad.
Broken piston skirt
Rocker arm(s)
Lifter(s)
Need to be more specific . . .
