The harder you try and suppress memory the less chance you will have to get over it. There is no way to erase your memory outside of a brain operation but then you will lose some memory but no way to know which ones and the one your wanting too most likely be one of them. The best way to get over an addiction is to change it to the complete opposite.

Be careful going that route....
We all learn by making mistakes. If you erase your memory of doing "bad stuff," then that makes you suceptable to making the exactly the same mistake all over again, just as if it were the first time.
Also, if you had a tough time about something and you hate having the memory of it. If you erase the memory of the experience, since what we experience makes what we are, you, in fact, lose part of you.
I don't know what you mean by useless thoughts. If you erase it, how would you prevent yourself from having that thought again and not even realize it?
My understanding is, erasing memory is actually possible in limited scope by use of hypnotics.

Keep the useless thoughts. That is your imagination.
You cannot erase bad memory. You can exercise your memory and train your mind to remeber things using techniques.
My favorite techniques follow. I repeat to myself the things I want to remember over and over in my head. I repeat a persons name when they tell it to me out loud (dual purpose - they will correct you if you pronounce it wrong), I say it in my head when they shake my hand, then I say it to myself when the conversation is over and each time I see that person thereafter. Take notes. Write down just enough to jog your memory about the whole idea the note refers to. If your notes are garbage, take better ones next time.
A trick of the mind and body is addiction. I was treated as a sex addict. I replaced one activity with another. I still really enjoy a good romp in the hay, but it does not consume me because I am busy doing other things. Preoccupation is a fine technique to use to fool the brain to focus on something else. I was so preoccupied with making dinner yesterday, I didn't realize the G/F was walking around topless.

Simply put No Five years ago my ex wife walked out taking our eldest child to the states and leaving me with a baby and a three year old, She went on the pretext of a holiday. My mindset of these days, weeks, months and years still haunt me so, the nights spent in oblivion of too much whisky trying to figure out what the hell was going on and why it was happening, then being up in the morning having to put of a happy, unconcerned smiling face for the children at all hours wither it be 3am or 6am. But these are the memories that have made me what I am today and if I was honest I think and hope it has made me a better person with a deeper understanding of people, their hopes, fears and aspirations. So do I like these memories NO would I want to lose them, sorry no they are part of me and it would be like taking away something that makes me me

Oh, oh, pick me! I totally know the answer!!! OK, here it is: your brain knows what thoughts are too disturbing or inappropriate for you. If your brain finds an image or memory that could damage you, it will make you completely forget it. So, there is no way you can get rid of those thoughts unless your brain knows it could seriously damage you character. Good luck and have a good life.
