We wanted control of the oil. Despite several inspections that found no WMD, Bush convinced Congress they were in Iraq and a threat. He also insisted Saddam Hussein was connected to 9/11. So far, neither of these allegations has been proved to be true, and the so-called hunt for bin Laden just poofed away.

It started with the bipolar world in the Cold War era, where the US vied with the USSR, seeking to extend its influences elsewhere in the globe.

The Middle East was one such power vacuum area where it's oil supply intrigued both the Soviets as well as the American's interest.

Aligning some Middle-Eastern countries with them (ie. Saudi Arabia), the US played a bigger role in the legitimising Israel. Since the birth of the Jewish state, the US had been an ardent supported of the Israelis.

Later, there was the Persian Gulf Crises which America saw in its interest or responsibility to intervene.

Hence, resulting in its persisting involvement in the Middle East till Iraq of today.

I am assuming that you are refering to the war in Iraq. There are several reasons that we are over in Iraq right now. One of those reasons is that we were attacked by al quida on 9/11. Being the superpower that we are any time that we are attacked we feel the need to attack someone back.
Another reason that we are in Iraq right now is that the American Goverment did what it does best and that is lie. They told the American public that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction AKA nuclear weapons. Eventually when no WMD's were found the American Public rebeled against the president which is why his approval rating is so low right now.

Because Bush lied about what was over there. Also the American government thinks it should police the world and tell them what is right and wrong. If we took care of the people in our own nation first we wouldn't have homeless or starving people here in the states.
