What should I do should I encounter one or more coyotes in a residential area?

I narrowly missed today encountering a group of three coyotes while I was walking home in a suburban residential area. I want to know what I should do if I were to directly encounter coyotes. (i.e. make noise, look small, look big, run, run, etc,)

Try a rousing chorus of "How much is that doggie in the window." Second suggestion, whatever you do, look cool. Third suggestion, carry a cell phone and call 911.
