I suspect you mean (X – 4)^2 = 3. If that is the case then
X – 4 = ± √3
x = 4 - √3, 4 + √3

2x-8=3
2x-8+8=3+8 adding 8 to both sides
2x=11 divide both sides by 2
x=5.5
