Ironically I just got through watching a movie from 1940 titled Ghost Breakers with Bob Hope. I can stand to watch movies before 1970 and in fact, in most cases I prefer them. Nowadays, many film makers feel that if they dont put the "F" word in a movie it wont sell, but what they may not know is that ALL of the blockbuster movies dont have it , nor do that have tons of sex in them. But still, what I dont like about today's movies is the camera switching every 2 or 3 seconds to another scene or someone talking in the movie. No way that is good for anyone's eyes. I have perfect vision and it causes me to have a headache alot with all the camera switching. In the pre 1970 movies, for that matter even up until about 1990, you had scenes where the camera panned the whole area without switching a blue million times to show another scene or switching to each person talking.
As far as favorites, that is hard to say. I like Ghost Breakers, then again I love Hound of the Baskervilles with Basil Rathbone playing Sherlock Holmes, then there is Abbott and Costello in Hold That Ghost, and Red Skelton in Whistling in the Dark, and Bela Lugosi as Dracula.
As far as actors, I'd say overall, the older ones were better, but there are many good actors today. If Hollywood would cut out the excessive sex, and language, and again scene switching, people would be more apt to view their movies.

I love most all movies. Born in the 60s I watched all of the old ones and there is a lot to be said for some of the old classics.

There are some great movies from back in the day. The classic Black n Whites! Ahh man, I loved those.
Gone With the Wind
Grapes of Wraith
Of Mice and Men
Shirley Temple movies
Those are some great movies. The acting, to me, is the same. I mean, of course, techniques have progressed-as they should over time-but it is all acting.

Yeah, I love old movies! I have a lot of favorites Charade, Boys town, Guess Who's Coming to Dinner, A Patch of Blue, Kapo and many more! I like silent films too! I don't know that the acting is better but it's definitely different!

there are many great films from this period of time.
I dont really have a favorite, as I am trying to watch more for a better comparison.
I feel like you can not even compare today's action to previous acting because there is so much to influence the differences.
From black and white film to color
different subjects
and changes in the world all influence acting today.

God yes.
Gone With the Wind, The Day the Earth Stood Still, The Wizard of Oz, and so many others. . .
The special effect are, of course, much better today, but I think the acting was better then. They did not have all the devices today, but still put out some great movies. . .

yep I like just about all the Disney movies from that era and I also love watching the Joan Crawford and Bette Davis movie Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? There's probably some others but I can't think of them right now.

I actually like watching those old movies. I don't have a favorite but one that sticks out in my mind is Swing Time with Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire. Anything with them or Joan Crawford. I like the acting from that time. You had to have a lot of talent in order to be in movies.

Sure - I love The Thin Man Series, Casablanca, Hitchcock - just to name a few. The acting is better than that in the average movie today because we are watching the "better than average" movies of yesteryear. Of course they had their clinkers then too!
