You've probably got a loose vacuum hose. When you hit the brakes, it is starving your car for air, nearly making it stall. Check your intake fittings and your vacuum hoses. Unless the thing he was hitting under the hood was the master cylinder or brake booster - then that's your problem.

I'll bet he was beating on your starter, trying to shake some life into it. (This sometimes works , but a tap is more appropriate than a beating.

Anyway, It didn't work in this case, and once you replaced the starter, it should have nothing to do with it....... unless he pounded on your spark plugs or dislodged the wires. I would look there first because it sounds like 1 or more cylenders is not firing.

If this is the case , you might report your friendly roadside helper to his superior.

Sounds to me like the car has dropped a cylinder due to either a plug wire off, broken plug, broken plug wire boot, split wire, or loose plug. Check all the plugs on that particular side of the car where the starter is(most likely on the passenger side) unless it's frontwheel drive(in front of engine). Check all those plugs/wires for what I mentioned. If that's not it. Call road-side services and tell them to fix your car....
