If your car has 3000 miles on the oil then change it. Although oil theoretically does not break down, the additive packages are pretty much gone after 4500 miles and the oil also builds up acid that can etch the metal and wear the engines moving parts. If your engine has 1800 miles of this oil change and your trip isn't over 1200 miles or so, it would probably be okay to change it when you get back. If you go over 3000 miles when you get to your destination, then change it before you leave on your way home. You should probably know that highway miles are a lot better on your engine then city miles. If you do a lot of city driving then be sure to change it every 3000 miles. If you drive the vehicle mostly on the highway then you can go farther.

Get the oil changed and some times the dealer where you bought it will do it free first oil change that way you will have the correct oil filter. Write the filter part number in the owners manual where you can find it and how many qts of oil the engine actually takes. Have a nice trip! Also changing the original oil early get rid of any metal filings that wore off during the initial break in. I reccomend using Mobil 1 you can buy at walmart for your next oil change after your trip.

I was told when growing up that I could drive a car without gas if I wanted to but check the oil. My daddy always told me oil is too cheap, change it whether it needs it or not.

Both of these sayings are good. I have never had a car motor to go bad on me. My 4x4 Mazda has a 164,000 on it now and purrs like a kitten. About half of these miles are working miles pulling trailers and stuff. I change my oil every 3k.

Change the oil always. I tell my kids that mess up on the oil one time and your car is gone.

Absolutly not period, 5,000 mile is based on perfect conditions period. Do you rebuild your engine every 500 miles ? Well then now where getting somewhere. Now, we all live in whats called severe conditions, and that is in effect everywhere you have cold down to 30 degrees, and heat as high as 85-90 summer. How many miles are on your un-rebuilt engine? Any enthusiest knows, we all change our oil synthetic every 2500 miles, varnish, carbon, gunk is in the oil after 2,000 miles, do we want that in our engines until 5,000, omg no. I change the filter alone at 1500 miles. then at 2500-3000 i change the synthetic oil. And I raise the viscosity from 5w20 to 0w30 no in the winter time, and now 5w30 summer, why, piston ring wear, we all know it exists.

Generally a new cars first oil change should be done about 5,000 miles but, refer to the owners manual first especially since your distance is so far. You can always stop into a quick lube at your scheduled interval should the need arise during your trip.

I have a 2000 Ford Crown Victoria with 160,000 miles on it, I have never taken it back to the dealer for a service and I change the oil every 10k miles whether it needs it or not. and I dont use synthetic oil just plain jane penzoil 10W40. it's up to you but they recoment oil changes every 3k miles to get you in to sell you something else. Same goes for the dealer services. They will tell you it voids the warrenty so dont buy one in the first place. buy one from your credit union they are half the price and twice the coverage.
