If you have to do more than put brushes in it they are not worth putting a armature or magnet in and it would be a whole lot easier to just replace the whole starter. I am a Briggs and Stratton Master Service Technician and have worked on then for the past 25 years. They are not cheap, probably in the 100-150 dollar range. Hope this helped ;-)

I have found that replacing the brushes and pinion gear and giving the armature a good cleaning usually has them back working.
