In the same way that mass and energy are different forms of the same thing, space and time are also different forms of the same thing. Distances between events can be 'spacelike' or 'timelike' depending on the inertial frames of reference occupied by the observer and the thing being observed. This leads to the concept of a 'continuum' in which space and time are equivalent and the nature of the seperation of cause and effect is measured in meters or seconds (which are related to each other by velocity expressed as a fraction of the speed of light)

Existence is a cause-effect chain. This chain creates events. Everything is an event. Events need room. We perceive 4 dimensions that give events this room. We call three space and one time.
