It's funny, I'm a fantasy author and the only fantasy books I've ever read were Tolkien's, so I guess he's my favorite.
I'd say most fantasy is either too full of itself or just so heavily influenced by Tolkien that you may as well just read Tolkien nowadays.

I think Tolkien's work obviously shines and Zelazny is another classic author whose books should still be regarded among the best, but there are also modern authors out there who deserve recognition (and not just Rowling). George R.R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire series is gritty and realistic. Then there's Russian author Sergei Lukyanenko. He's already well known in his home country, and the first two books of his Nightwatch series have just been translated into English and have met with lots of critical success. He's definitely on my watch list.

Roger Zelazney - his Amber Chronicles are the best fantasy books going. They have everything - love, hate, war, a great dysfunctional family of 9 princes and a lot more. I adore Prince Corwin and his son Merlin. Pax - C.

So far C.S. Lewis, author of the Chronicles of Narnia. He drew excellent parallels between his fantasy world of Narnia and the accounts of the Bible.

It;s a tie between Tolkien and Mercedes Lackey, although I am leaning towards the latter. Her books are just as interesting and in depth as Tolkien's, but fow want of a better way to say this, they're written more flowingly.

raymond e. feist (the riftwar saga), darkness at sethanon THE best! he has the most amazing talent for telling stories and his ideas are fantastic. but, i havent read fantasy for a long time, so i dont really know whats new out there. feist though is timeless and i have to go with him. i could name a few others, but i will stick with feist as my number 1!

Right now Robert Jordan has my attention. I am reading the Wheel of Time Series. And while he is wordy at times, the plot is deep, the characters vibrant, and the dialogue well written.

I have 2:
Gail Carson Levine
J. K. Rowling
I like them because they write wonderful stories. I like G.C. Levine because she writes so many good stories about magic--she makes everything tragic and magical.
I like J. K. Rowling because her writing is so realistic although it's fantasy. They're both awesome.

Anne McCaffrey goes on the top of my list.
The depth of detail and history in her books makes each read richly rewarding.
