As the others said, it cools the body. It does this through evaporation, which takes heat with it as it evaporates. The body tries to maintain a constant temperature, by sweating when overly warm, and shivering when too cold.

The purpose of perspiration is to regulate body temperature. It cools you down when your temperature rises. That's why people in hot countries drink hot tea - they perspire and it cools them down.

The body perspires in order to cool itself. When we sweat, water droplets - in some case, alot of them - are secreted from pores in our skin to the outside of our body. The elevated temperature of our skin causes this water to evaporate. Since energy (in this case, heat) is required to evaporate the water, this heat is contributed by our hot body. Since the heat gets "used up" by evaporating the water, that heat is gone from our body ...and we subsequently feel cooler.
