Indian question... Iyengar/Iyer?

Lets say "hypothetically" one kid's an Iyengar and another is an Iyer and they just meet, is it possible that they are related somehow?

Both the casts are originated from the South Indian Brahmins. That is the relation between Iyengar and Iyer.
