We purchased our house with this system in it, like you. Ours has an automatic back flush. We contacted the supplier (a local company) and they came and taught us all about it. It does take a salt. Ours holds about 3 bags, which we also have to get from the supplier. The shape of the salt at the local Home Depot and such doesn't seem to dissolve as well.
One other thing. We also became the owners of a water filtration system in the kitchen for drinking water and the ice maker. Because you are adding salt to your system, the filtration system takes it back out so you don't have to ingest the extra salt. All of this is serviced by the same company and it cost us up to 200.00 a year for the service, salt and filters. Not sure we would have one if it wasn't already here.
You do use much less detergent in both the dishwasher and washing machines, and we have had very little as far as itchy skin this past winter. It is also supposed to be much better for your plumbing.

The system is entirely automatic. Including water levels and so on. One can set the flush time to day or night. A manual is available free on line for most water softners that gives instructions. You do better to read the specific instructions for your unit. Basically there is no cleaning whatsoever.
The main purpose of a water softener is to avoid the "soap scum" on sinks and showers and tubs. What happens here is the stearate in the soap forms a scum with the calcium in the water and deposits on the surfaces as scum.
Contrary to the belief of many people, laundry uses detergents and detergents are totally uneffected by calcium or hard water. The invention of detergents in laundry soap was a really great thing because they form no scum. And your laundry washer will not work better with soft water. However, your dishwash will, because the rinse itself is clear water and the calcium will deposit onto the surfaces of freshly washed dishes as streaking and buildup.
If you have high blood pressure, you need to run a pipe directly to your sink and install a seperate faucet. The water softener process is zeolite crystals loaded with sodium. Thus sodium replaces the calcium. Its a replacement process. and the softened water contains amounts of sodium that effect people with high blood pressure negatively.

Water conditiong systems usually have some sort of back flush system, either automatic or manual. Then you need to add a speacial salt to one of the tanks. You need to know the type and model. If its a really old system you have to replace the tanks periodically. Those wouldbig the big old metal tanks.

Do you have a name on the tank? Perhaps the company has a web site and you could download the instruction manual. If you call someone in town for help, be sure you have the manurfacturer name and any other important information, model for example.
For an idea on how they operate, look at this site:

this may rely to the water and the muse of it really is. A water softener is honestly no longer undesirable on your position. Minerals are bumped off by technique of the equipment from the water flow. it really is not any longer extremely meant to clear out sulfur, notwithstanding it may help decrease undesirable egg odors interior your water. that's extra acceptable performed by technique of way of a carbon clear out.
