I do not know if there is a word that works in all cases.
Normally, we say 'an element'
However, there are special cases, where the same atom can combine differently (with other identical atoms) to form structures with different characteristics.
For example, which of O2 or O3 represent the element Oxygen? We tend to say O2 (more stable and more common). Yet O3 (Ozone) is also "matter that is made up of only one kind of atom." We do not think of Ozone as being elemental oxygen.
How about Diamond (one form of crystaline carbon) compared to Fullerene (e.g., c60, sixty carbon atoms assembled in a spherical molecule, called a Buckyball)?
A list of molecules made up of only one kind of atom, for a given element, are called "allotropes". However, the word is only used when an element can form more than one type of stable compound. O2 (now called dioxygen) and O3 (ozone) are allotropes of Oxygen.
However, Cl2 (Chlorine) is not called allotrope (because there is not another stable form of a molecule made up of only chlorine atoms.
"Monoatomic" is already used for molecules of elements made up of only one atom of the element (for example, Argon).
So, I do not know.
I guess you use "element" when there is only one possible structure. If that only possible structure is one atom per molecule, you can be more precise and use monoatomic element.
When there are more than one possibility for the same element, then use "allotrope"

An element is made up of only one kind of atom. If matter is made up of more than one kind of atom then it is a compound.

I thought all natural matter is made up of one kind of atom. Such as, Hydrogen is made up of the hydrogen atom, which consist of one electron, if I remember correctly. Copper is made up of the copper atom, and carbon the carbon atom. it is sythetics that are made of different kinds of atoms, I guess. Maybe someone else will come along that knows for sure, but this is my guess at it.

ELEMENT!!!!!!!!!!! but if it is more than 1 type of atom per molecule, then its called a compound. if there are different molecules its called a mixture.
