There are many different types of feathers in the Headress, most symbolize that certain bird and lets the wearer take on the characteristic of that bird...ie... black meaning the raven, or the carrier of messages from the dead, or soul catchers, the Eagle representing strength and wisdom, they simply represent the Spirit of that bird, as wearing buffalo hide during Ceremonies endows the wearer with the strength and courage of the Buffalo. Meaning vary from tribe to tribe but all point to aquiring the Spirit of that animal.

Among the Plains Indian Nations owning a black feather meant that the warrior had killed a woman. A black headdress sounds terrible to me.
