This is before my time. However when ever there is a hit film about the Vietnam era it bring a lot of request for songs of that era. Here are some Albums with songs during that war. There are many such albums but beware! Some have imitations of the artist and not the real artist. Be sure you check to make sure the album has the original artist.

Here are some Albums I found:
Good Morning Vietnam: A Soundtrack to the '60s
Platoon (1986 Film) - And Songs From The Era

Most of these are 60's rock. If your father was into country or some other genre I doubt they would be included. Yet this is the cheapest way to get a lot of these songs together. I hope this helps.

Just rent the movie Apocalypse Now for a good cross-section of songs the troops listened to over there.

If that's too heavy, rent Robin Williams' "Good Morning Vietnam" which was based on an a true story of a dj spinning platters for the troops out in the field. An excellent movie.
