My niece watches them and speaks fairly good spanish now.

I actually read some literature that indicated that children learn better, in general, from PEOPLE rather than from videos. The specifics of the article were anti-videos for any kid under 2, but they did mention language videos as not being very effective. Kids apparently need live people to teach them ;)

I like the suggestion someone made to get a sitter that speaks another language or model the language yourselves around the house.

Good for you for wanting to do this! And while your child is young is the best time - especially to get them to hear and replicate other languages' sounds that don't exist universally in all languages!

Hire a babysitter from a different language and tell her to only speak her language to her child.
My brothers wife is Bulgarian and she speaks the language to her daughter at home and the little girl speaks it fluently, but since she is in pre k in the USA, her language of choice is English and her mother cannot get her to speak the Bulgarian language anymore. She refuses at the tender age of 4.

In what language? my tring to teach my child Chinese, I enrolled him in a language school, I also bought music tapes for him to listen when he was learning how to speak.
