If I delve to deeply into these questions, I become afraid. It's almost like I'm afraid that I'll realize I shouldn't exist and, therefore, will cease to exist.

The fact that you can have these thoughts should prove to you that you do exist. If you were a mistake, the fact you were a mistake would mean you exist. So just accept the fact you exist. What you do with your existence is up to you of course. Though I might suggest you try and make the world a better place. Sometimes even mistakes can make things better. (Peanut brittle was a mistake - thank goodness it happened!)

Why this and not a void? What you are beginning to understand is limitations of the rational human mind. What you are really thinking about is BEING and NOTHINGNESS. This a duality and a basic way of thinking -much like computers with ones and zeros. What the universe really is cannot be addressed using this kind of thinking.

You need to use a more spiritual and mystical approach through meditation in order to understand it's non-dual nature and inherent warmth. You will always be you, you will always have your ego - it's healthy to have a distinction between yourself and the rest of the Universe, but you must also understand the other levels of consciousness as well.

Don't get caught up in the negative aspects of this, as long as you are are using your MIND - reading books and talking to people - you will strengthen your sense of self... You'll have to decide yourself how all of this was possible - whether by random evolutionary chance or a creator. The important thing is that we are able to tap into a more mystical level of human consciousness.

You might go too far into the dark by contemplating nothingness - like someone said above; you should be having fun with these qualities, if you are not, then you need to heal your body and spirit through mental focus like meditation. Nothingness also makes everything possible - it's two sides of the same coin. Just as light/dark good/evil. When you abandon these extream judgements, you realize these yes/no qualities are merely axiomatic and lead to negativity and an enhancement of negative emotions.

You almost get it. Robert P I think that you get afraid because you might just be starting to "see" the universe for what it really is. Void, nothingness, perfection without conflict no love/hate. We start to fear when what we are "seeing" goes against what we have been taught about good/evil gods/demons.

Thats ok not everyone can peer into perfection. So there is a very real fear when you get close so that it will scare away the weaker. Eastern religion try very hard to obtain this state of perfection/void/nothingness. So really that is kinda the goal to cease to exists, and join the nothingness.

You are here only because you are not the center of the universe. If the universe depended solely on man, it would have already collapsed on our frailty and weakness. You are a created being, although not all are "children of God". Some people are created for mercy and others for destruction; but, all are here to fulfill the will of a sovereign God.

Do you really know where your own thoughts originate? Why have so many people in history come up with the same revolutionary ideas at the exact same time, although separated by communication and distance?

It is an honest man that doesn't even take credit for his own thoughts, but realizes that their origin is outside his mind.

I've been digging around with those kind of questions for the last few years. It's all very confusing for me. We have no reason to exist, the universe has no reason for working the way it does, but yet here we are. Does that mean that effects can occur without causes? Doesn't that mean that the universe could change at anytime to something completely different for no reason? After all, there is no reason for the universe to be the way it is now, or even exist at all.

I still exist. Why?

OK, jimmy. I ALWAYS think of these things and well, keep thinking, because it becomes fun. A girl on this page said "Don't think this, or you will end up in unfamiliar territory, you cant see in the dark". Well, shut your lights off, and wait, just sit there and wait. At first you will be blind, not be able to see. But then, your eyes will become used to the dark, and you will see more clearly. This darkness represents philosophy, and your eyes represent clarity and assurance on the subject matter. After awhile, you will not fear these thoughts, but become fascinated with them.
By the way, in some sort, we don't exist. We are made up of Atoms. Atoms are made of protons neutrons and electrons. they are made of subatomic particles. They are made from energy. Energy is made of waves. But other then that, there is nothing. Waves are non-existent. Therefore, everything is nothing, and nothing is everything. Our world could just be a hologram, or a video game. Some boy could just get bored and shut us off, poof, gone.
Hope this helps.

Seriously, If these words are serious than you are very close to losing control over your mind.
The fact that you are asking questions like this shows great intelligence. You have to look at them from a different perspective. Do not be afraid of your thoughts. I to acknowledge the odds against my existence but I find that it adds great meaning and mystery to life.
Breath deep, as your thoughts on this escalate just begin to think of something else. Literally command your thoughts. Realize that you are here and be grateful for the life you have. You owe it those you love and to yourself to keep on going. Do not be consumed by thoughts on the odds against you and accept the simple truth that you are here and that there is a great reason for you being here.
Though I don't mean to escalate your fear there is great truth in the words of Roosevelt. " The only thing we have to fear is fear itself", and the Bible quote " that which I fear most has come upon me". I tell you this because you have to be aware that these thoughts can have serious consequences.
Just stop thinking about these things, calm down, look around, you're here, and it is beautiful. There are cold people in this world but you aren't one of them, go and give the world you warmth.

You won't go anywhere. Just live your life, but keep asking the questions. Treat your inquiries more like an adventure.

Just think, you were formed in your mother's womb, and we all know how miraculous that whole thing is, you didn't have much to say about that. You came out of a void, of sorts, and were taken care of. I guess my point is, we don't have control over much.

The only small choice we have is in 'awareness'. If we can can be aware of our thoughts, as they arise, and mostly ignore them, we can experience more ease in our life. The new freedom will widen, but there is not a "void", as a result (like some people think), but less suffering.

Your thoughts continually take you on 'fear trips'...they are made of vapor...work at ignoring them. It does help.

You must have watched The Matrix too many times. Seriously, no one knows exactly why we exist or how (these questions have been plaguing philosophers forever), but the fact is, we do exist. It's up to you to find some purpose in your life, but believe me, it's not going to just disappear. Use your curiosity in a constructive way. Read and learn. Be happy to be alive.

Good question. The universe exists because of the Big Bang. The big bang exists because of a previous universe. The previous universe existed because of a previous big bang. Why does any of this exist? No idea. But if it didn't, than you wouldn't exist to ask these questions. None of your asking, nor anything that you could possibly do, would affect the existence of the entire existence of anything.
