I've never seen a nonstop to New York from Australia before. Generally, you will fly into Los Angeles. Both times my brother made the trip he flew into LAX and then had a LONG layover to get back home.

It all depends: which one is closer to the halfway point of your trip? Or is neither? I'd personally say you should go through whichever one is closest to your home country. See if you can get a layover of an hour or two, so you can get out of the plane and walk around. Break your trip up a bit. It's long enough, honestly. Don't make it any longer at one go than it has to be.

It depends on what your final destination is. Are you going to the West coast or the East coast?
For the East coast, stop in New York or Boston.
For the West coast, use Los Angeles or San Francisco.
