Bright red, spurting blood is usually a good sign that you cut an artery.

You will be bleeding very rapidly and usually it has to be a fairly decent cut to cause any problems with cutting an artery.

if you cut an artery it will be very hard to stop the bleeding and the blood will flow out rapidly.

kitty is correct. If you cut one it will spurt blood 2ft or more every time your heart beats. Husband tried to get a ball out of a play gun with a steak knife and slipped. Blood squirted across the kitchen to the top of kitchen cabinets. Bad bad mess.
