The computer I bought works well. It was about $800 and comes with Windows Vista Home Premium, 2 GB of RAM, a TV tuner, and an AMD Athlon 5000+ 64 X2. It also has a CD/DVD burner and decent integrated graphics, though I installed a GeForce 7900 to enhance my gameplay. It is an HP Pavilion m7750n. They can expand to 4 GB and it has several expansion slots (1 PCI-X and 3-4 PCI). For your downloads, it has a 400GB hard drive. Anything in that range from HP or Gateway should work for you. If you're interested in a laptop with similar qualities, consider a Sony Vaio or Toshiba Q-sario, but those will cost you closer to $1500.

Dell may be good at work, but I don't think this is the brand for you.

Dell are very basic computers unless you go for their expensive line ie: their XPS range. The reason they work well at work is because you're merely browsing the net, writing e-mails, documents etc - these are the most basic system functions. I assure you, once you load a game into one of those things you'll want to take it back. I have Sims 2 also with every expansion to date. My quality settings were all set to minimum - and this is with a graphic card upgrade (the best one my system could handle too). Dells are not very expandable either. You say you want lots of RAM? My old Dell only supported up to 1 gig. TV tuner it could probably handle just about. That's it really.

If you want a good brand, I'd stick with HP. I'm currently running one which I paid £40 less than the Dell for. The Dell had N64 graphics. This one meets 360.

A better option would be to build your own. It's really not that dificult - just pick up a computer building guide and you set! For around £700 you could probably build a machine that beats an Xbox 360 whilst having all the bells and whistles of today. If you built a machine that costed around £1000, you could possibly match a PS3 too! Just thought I'd give you a taste of real gaming power cheap (for a PC).

Why don't you buy a bear bone system, and put your hard drive and DVD/CD rom into it, that way you can get a top of the range system

Have you considered building one? I've had my fingers in most you listed, none are that good. You can save a bunch of money doing it yourself and it's not that difficult. I would hold off on Vista for now, give it 6 to 12 months. The first link has an 800.00 build and two others on it. Do all the reading before you buy.
