They were both great QB's and it's really tough to compare them. Marino has the stats, Montana has the rings. I'll say this though, had Marino been on the Niners he'd have the rings too. I have no doubt about that. I can't say the same about Montana had he been on those Dolphin teams. Rings are often over emphasized when it comes to great QB's. Many of the same people who use that as a measuring stick don't put Bradshaw in that category, or even Mark Rypien who doesn't deserve to be. We don't use "rings" as a way to rate any other position in any sport so I don't see the point. Sometimes it's bad luck or circumstances.
For Marino, he never had a running game or a defense to support him.
Someone mentioned Elway, I agree he is up there. But to me he was up there before he won any Super Bowls. Only after he won did he become "great" in a lot of people's minds. He wasn't "great" when he was a better player, but became "great" after he was past his prime and had the team to make him great. That makes no sense.
As for whoever said Marino was only out for his stats, that is far from true. The man was one of the most passionate players and competitiors I've ever seen play football, or any sport for that matter. He'd give up every stat for a shot at the Super Bowl. In the end, it just wasn't meant to be for him.

As a Cowboy fan hate to say it but Montana. Montana was cool Marino may have had more 4th quarter comebacks which means he couldnt put points on the board regularly like Joe could by far Marino can have the passing records they wont give him what he lacked as a player which was on the field class. It was a load of crap how when he got pressured he would yell and scream til red in the face at the offensive line i mean chewing them out getting facemask to facemask thats was childlike. Its a wonder he didnt get sacked alot more. Some say it was "passion for the game" i call it

Joe Montana, count the rings. Marino was never able to win the big one while Joe Montana won it 4 times. Marino may have the stats, but Montana has the championships, and that is what counts in the end.

Montana won the big game 4 times including the head to head matchup in SB 19.
Marino could barely get there and couldn't deliver when the team put their chances squarely on him.

Marino.........everyone says montana because he was on a team that one four superbowls..........but the 49er's won those superbowls not Joe Montana by himself. Marino didn't have Jerry Rice.

Dan the Man...montana had a team full of all-stars (on both sides of the ball)...it was later learned the owner...who was it berlintino (sp?) had illegally circumvented the salary cap to build those SF teams...on an even playing field montana couldn't carry Dan's jock strap. To the people that say SB rings define who is the best QB then I guess Trent Dilfer was better than Dan Marino, Dan Fouts, et al....we all know that isn't true!!!

marino. super bowls are won by the team, not the individual qb. its a team game. marino was able to play with less talent around him. its a close call though as montana is certainly one of the best to ever play the game.
