This happened because offensive strategy and tactics did not keep up with the defense. Trenches were left over from prior wars. But what was fairly new was the machine gun. The machine gun was kind of cumbersome, so it usually got planted and stayed put. The only way to defeat it was a frontal assault. But the frontal assaults were just what the machine gun was good against.
So what they had was once the armies were in position, it was next to impossible to move them. Well fortified machine gun nests made frontal assaults a blood bath. If the army did take over a trench, the enemy fell back to the next one. And usually the army on the offense was too beat up to continue.

First Question
The Advancement of technology and the lag of tactical development. The armies made Machine Guns, very effective Artillery Shells and grenades were mass killer and the armies of Europe were still fighting in the tactics of Napoleon with men walking close together. This made the men dig in to find some cover that can protect them. It was the development of the Tank, Light Machine Guns and Combined-armed Tactics were created to break the stalemate
Second Question
Russia was suffering in WWI, The people were starving and most of the people lost a lot of their love ones. The people cried out for the end to the killing. The first revolution removed the tzar but the new government stayed in war.The Bolsheviks truly said they were going to get Russia out of the war. Advances in weaponry, particularly the machine gun and improvements to artillery had made defending a fortified position much easier. Unfortunately the old style tactics of storming the enemy position with infantry on foot was still being practiced by the Generals of the day. It took a disgustingly long time for them to learn that they needed something new. And by that time the trench systems were large and elaborate on both sides.
Since nobody knew how to attack effectively, nobody could gain ground, so everyone just stayed where they were are repeatedly attacked, hoping for a miracle.
Eventually new tactics and technology returned mobile warfare to the forefront.
The Tsars of Russia had ruled for centuries, but had become increasingly decadent and incompetent. So, the Bolsheviks launched a "people's revolution" to remove the Tsars and make a better life for the people. After some bloody and nasty fighting, the Communists took over. And history shows that they didn't really make things any better for the people.

They stalemated because their forces were about equal in numbers and skill. Both the Germans/Austrians and the French/English had similar guns, troops, tanks, weapons in general. Neither could break out and drive through the enemy lines.
Bolsheviki came to power in Russia because they were emboldened by the war which was draining Russian will and because the people supported them.
